What damage can occur in FAI?

Gradual detachment of the labrum and delamination of the articular cartilage and will occur. In chronic cases significant cartilage loss and arthritis of the acetabulum can result.

Because the bump (CAM) is jammed against the edge of the acetabulum (socket) destruction of the articular cartilage can occur leading to a full thickness tear seen in the lower part of the image. Bare bone is exposed consistent with developing arthritis.

An x-ray can provide basic information about femoral neck (CAM) and acetabular (pincer) deformities. However, the absence of typical features on the plain film does not exclude FAI. In this case an MRI arthrogram will help.
