Complex hip reconstruction in inflammatory disease (Rheumatoid)

Inflammatory joint disease leads to poor bone quality. Hip replacement is challenging because the diseased joint might contain large cavities (marked red) and vulnerable bone behind. Implants can loosen up because of deficient bone.

Inflammatory joint disease like rheumatoid arthritis does also lead to extensive destruction of ligaments, tendons, joint capsule and muscles. Should medical treatment not have led to the desired result the joint might be left with instability, deformity and pain. Major reconstructive joint surgery can help patients to avoid wheelchair dependence. Hip replacement surgery might offer a stable and less painful joint. Modern implants allow for reconstruction of extensive bone defects. Recovery after joint replacement surgery will particularly depend on muscle strengthening exercise.
